Get Involved

It’s always the right time to do something kind. How about starting now? TODAY highlighted stories of empathy, generosity and humanity during its second-annual #ShareKindness campaign in December 2016. Learn about ways to keep the momentum going in 2017 below.

Celebrate Kindness

Sometimes moments that seem ordinary can have a profound impact in someone’s life. You don’t think much of it, bringing homemade soup to a sick friend, cutting a neighbors grass as you would your own, offering a ride to a coworker you see stranded in the rain. As often as you’ve done something thoughtful for someone else, it’s likely you’ve noticed the kindness of others, too.

Now’s your chance to celebrate that kindness. We want to hear from you about a special person who has gone out of their way to do something kind, whether for you or someone else.

Sound like a person you know? Tell us about that person on the #ShareKindness Facebook page or post about him or her on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #ShareKindness.

About #ShareKindness

As we enter another holiday season, the NBC family is celebrating our common values of empathy, generosity, and humanity.

Every day, as we go about our ordinary routines, we have an opportunity to reach out – to a stranger, a friend, a family member – and make that person feel extraordinary. We want to shine a spotlight on these acts of grace, large and small, and spark a chain reaction of kindness from coast to coast.

Hold the door for a stranger, donate clothes to a local shelter, or give a complement to a kind person in  your life — and tell us about it on our Facebook page or with the #ShareKindness hashtag on Twitter and Instagram.

Every story shared and every act of kindness committed will count towards the goal of 1 million acts of kindness in 2016.

Because if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that the world can use a little more kindness. The NBC family is committed to growing the good in our world. Please join us.

#ShareKindness As A Family

What have you done lately to #ShareKindness in your life? For the rest of the year, NBC staff and friends are committing to sharing kindness in our individual lives.

Kindness can bring families closer together. Especially around the holiday season, perhaps the best way to celebrate being together is to #ShareKindness with each other as a family, setting a great example for one another and helping to make the world a better place at the same time.

There are lots of ways to get involved as a family, some are fun, some ordinary. Some special, and some that could impact someone’s life for years to come.

Here are some ways you can #ShareKindness as a family:

Simple:

  • Invite someone who may be lonely to Thanksgiving or a holiday dinner with your family
  • Sit down to dinner with your family and each give appreciation for one another
  • Make a meal as a family and deliver it to a sick or elderly friend
  • Leave a family holiday card in the mailbox for your mail carrier
  • Go through your house’s bookshelves to find old or unwanted books. Donate these to your local library
  • Have each family member write a letter to someone outside the family who made a difference in their life. If possible, send these letters. Otherwise, read them out loud to each other
  • Call a grandparent or other member of extended family whom you don’t see very often
  • If your family receives especially good service at a restaurant, ask to speak to a manager and tell him or her what a good employee the waiter/waitress is
  • Bake some holiday cookies as a family and bring them to your child’s class or share with your neighbors
  • Collect old or unwanted toys and donate them to a children’s hospital
  • Resolve not to complain about something that normally upsets you, and gently remind each other of this resolution when you slip up
  • Tape quarters to the vending machine at your local park so the next person can enjoy a treat on your family

Go the extra mile

#ShareKindness As A Classroom

Kindness is a choice we make. The act of going out of your way to help someone may seem like second nature to us, but it’s likely a learned behavior. In addition to setting an example for young people in our personal lives, teachers can have an enormous impact this season of kindness through special lesson plans focused on teaching kindness, activities celebrating kindness, and social and emotional learning plans.

We all want our communities and neighborhoods to be more kind and empathetic. Perhaps the best way to do that is to participate in a random act of kindness together as a community, strengthening your community ties through a shared experience.
